Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is Tallow greasy?

Tallow will definitely feel greasy the first time you apply it. It will keep feeling that way for up to 1 hour, but more commonly 20 minutes. Then it will absorb beautifully into your skin and you will be left with soft, hydrated skin. If you feel greasy after that time frame, you are applying too much.

  2. How much tallow do I need for my face?

An amount equivalent to a pencil eraser will cover your entire face. I suggest people always start with clean dry skin. Then apply once a day and increase frequency of application to your skin as you see fit.

  3. Where do we source our tallow from?

Our tallow is sourced from cattle on our property 90% of the time. Since we are a small farm, if ever we need more beef fat to help meet tallow demands, we source from other local small farms that we know raise their cattle as clean as we do.

  4. What is Tallow?

Tallow starts off as beef fat. The source of where you harvest from on the animal can be important. For example, the fat around kidneys and other internal organs is called ‘suet’ this is what we use for our skin care line. It’s softer and renders down more readily. The rest of the fat on the animal goes towards our cooking tallow. It’s naturally a little more course and is easier used for amazing meals in cooking tallow.

  5. Are there any preservatives?

No. I add zero chemicals to the tallow we produce. Because of this, I can only guarantee a 1 yr shelf life. Also, you may notice subtle texture in your whipped tallow (grainy feeling). I add the least amount of any ingredients (including oils) when creating salves and balms. This can sometimes allow the lipids in the beef fat to try to re-assimilate. I prefer texture variations in our products to added chemical or an oily tallow.

  6. Is tallow gluten free?

Yes. There is no wheat or barley in beef fat.

  7. Can I use tallow on oily/acne prone skin?

Yes! Please see our Acne Relief tallow. Tallow in itself will help to heal scarring and repair the skin. I have built an acne fighting tallow by adding oregano to the salve. Oregano is one of natures best antibacterial and antifungal agents. This makes it a powerful tool in clearing acne on your body. We have acne relief tallow available in multiple scents. Oregano infused oil is another great choice for stubborn acne.

  8. Does tallow have a ‘beefy’ scent?

Plain tallow does not smell pleasant. I don’t care how pure and clean it is. I don’t like the smell of it. However, with salves and balms the herbs are what you smell and not the beefy scent. For my scent sensitive/allergic reaction folks, I suggest our vanilla whipped tallow balm. It’s a great soft, subtle way to still use tallow and not be exposed to herbal fragrance.

  9. How should I store my tallow?

Salves and Balms should be stored at room temperature with the lid on, away from direct sunlight. Tallow is a very temperature sensitive product. Having it heat too much, too often, will definitely alter its texture over time. It could also make it go bad faster. It is shelf stable for 1 year. Cooking tallow is also shelf stable for 1 year. You can prolong the life of your cooking tallow and salves by placing them in the fridge, just understand that they will need a few minutes to warm up out of the fridge before they turn soft and easy to use again.

  10. What should I cook with tallow?

Everything! Haha! The only thing I personally can’t speak to is baking with tallow. I don’t have experience with that but using tallow for all things on the Blackstone, cast iron pans… amazing! Even just browning meat or cooking up veggies. Eggs? Delicious. It is not butter. I don’t recommend spreading it on toast. Haha!

Please do be aware, cooking with tallow is unique in that it has a very low melting point but a high flash point. It liquifies readily and can tolerate high temps better than most other oils. It receives a lot of compliments from folks that like to cook!
